Coolers used in hydraulic systems are often referred to as heat exchangers. This name stems from the fact that these coolers have the role of decreasing the temperature within a hydraulic system in order to avoid over-heating through various parts of the system. These coolers, whether in an open or closed system, decrease the temperature of the oil within the hydraulic system by using a core or a coil to mitigate the heat.
The main benefit of having a cooler in a hydraulic system is that it will extend the life of the system. The reason why it can extend the hydraulic system’s lifespan is because heat causes oil degradation which leads to friction. Heat sensitive components may also start to crack in an overheating system. If the system is kept from overheating with the use of a cooler, there is less chance of these issues occurring – though there are many other factors that need to be taken into consideration.
